³ God cwæð ða, "Gewurðe leoht," ond leoht wæarð geworht. ⁴ God geseah ða ðæt hit god wæs, ond he todælde þæt leoht fram ðam ðystrum. ⁵ Ond het ðæt leoht dæg ond þa ðystru niht: ða wæs geworden æfen ond merigen an dæg.

"Þis is nu ban of minum banum
ond flæsc of minum flæsce;
beo heo geciged fæmne,

² Þæt wif andwyrde, "Of ðæra treowa wæstme ðe synd on Paradisum we etað; ³ ond of ðæs treowes wæstme þe is on middan neorxnawange, God bebead us, ðæt we ne æton, ne we ðæt treow ne hrepodon ði læs we swelton."

¹¹ God cwæð, "Hwa sæde ðe ðæt ðu nacod wære, gyf ðu ne æte of ðam treowe ðe ic ðe bebead ðæt ðu ne æte?"

¹² Adam cwæð, "Ðæt wif ðe ðu me forgeafe to geferan, sealde me of ðam treowe, ond ic ætt."

¹³ God cwæð to ðam wife, "Hwi dydestu þæt?
Heo cwæð, "Seo nædre bepæhte me ond ic ætt."

ðu bist awyrged betweox eallum nytenum
ond wildeorum:

¹⁶ To ðam wife cwæð God eac swylce,

" Ic gemænifylde ðine yrmða ond ðine geeacnunga;
on sarnysse ðu ancenst cild,
ond ðu bist under weres anwealde
ond he gewylt ðe."

¹⁷ To Adame he cwæð, "For ðan ðe ðu gehyrdes ðines wifes stemne, ond ðu æte of ðam treowe ðe ic ðe bebead ðæt ðu ne æte,

is seo eorðe awyrged on ðinum weorce:
on geswyncum ðu etst of ðære eorðan
eallum dagum ðines lifes.
¹⁸ Ðornas ond bremelas heo aspryt ðe,
ond ðu ytst ðære eorðan wyrta.
¹⁹ On swate ðines andwlitan

Adam soðlice æfter þisum breac his wiues, ond heo eacnode ond acende Cain, ond cwæð, "Ic æfde mannan þurh God." ² Eft heo acende his broðor Abel. Abel wæs þa sciephirde, ond Cain hirðling.

³ Hit wæs þa æfter manegum dagum þæt Cain ofrode Gode lac of þære eorþan wæstmum. ⁴ Ond Abel ofrode of þam frumcænnedum sceapum his heowodum ond of hire fætnesse. Þa beseah God to Abele ond to his lacum ⁵ ond ne beseah to Caine ne to his lacum. Þa hirsode Cain þearle ond his newlite ætfeol.

¹⁰ God cwæð to him, "La, hwæt dydest þu? Seo stemn þines broðor blodes clipoð to me of eorðan. ¹¹ Nu þu bist awyrged ofer eorþan, þeo þe oponode hire muð ond underfeng þines broðor blod of þinre handa. ¹² Þonne þu tilast ðin on eorðan, ne sylð heo ðe nane wæstmas; woriende ond flyma þu bist ofer eorþan."

Men wurdon ða gemenifgylde ofer eorðan ond dohtra gestryndon. ² Ða gesawon Godes bearn, ðæt wæron gode men, manna dohtra ðæt hi wæron wlitige, ond namon him wif of eallum ðam ðe hi gecuron. ³ Ond God cwæð ða, "Ne ðurhwunað na min gast on men on ecnysse, for ðan ðe he is flæsc. [omitted: heora dagas belifað hundteontig ond twenti gearas.]" ⁴ Entas wæron wæron eac swylce ofer eorðan on ðam dagum, æfter ðan ðe Godes bearn tymdon wið manna dohtra ond hi cendon: ða synd mihtige fram worulde ond hlisfulle weras.
