Below a list of books of the Old and New Testament that are available in Old English. Genesis▪ A prose translation by Ælfric survives. It has been edited and published by Crawford (1922). So far, the first 21 chapters have been made available here. ▪ There are also two famous verse translations (in Germanic alliterative verse). It is available (externally) at Georgetown University. There is a famous verse translation of Psalms 51 [52] - 150 (the Paris Psalter), a prose translation of Psalms 1 - 50 [51], and various Old English glosses in Latin Psalter manuscripts. ▪ The Paris Prose Psalter (Psalms 1 - 50 [51]) available (externally) at Augusta State University. ▪ The Paris Psalter (verse) (Psalms 51 [52] - 150) available (externally) at Georgetown University. ▪ The late Old English Psalter gloss known as Eadwine’s Canterbury Psalter available here (Psalms 1-20 available). Also available in Harsley’s edition through Google Books (see the Digital Editions page). ProverbsNo translation is known. A sample new translation of chapter 10 is available here. New TestamentA complete set of the Gospels survives in the West-Saxon dialect, as well as good portions scattered in homilies and letters. The West-Saxon Gospels have been edited in good editions at least twice. The most recent one by R.M. Liuzza (1994), published for the Early English Text Society, is copyrighted and cannot be included on this website. We are working here from the editions by J. W. Bright. We are hoping to make the interlinear version from Eadwine’s Canterbury Psalter available at some point. Not available yet. Ælfric’s Treatise on the Old and New TestamentThis text is prefaced to Ælfric’s translation of his Heptateuch (the first seven books of the Bible). This text is available here (almost complete). |
